I don't think they even run ethernet in new houses unless you specifically request it. What I wouldn't give for a house with conduits everywhere.
The main trick is to get a conduit from the basement to the attic and go horizontal in either and then up/down in the wall. Fireplaces and the interface between garage/house are good candidates for getting through all floors. It sucks if everything is finished but if I remember correctly, you are an engineer, so you can probably convince yourself that an overhead wire cable tray looks cool (hopefully your spouse is also an engineer or unopinionated or blind).

Re: Good Router?
I drilled a hole through the wall from inside to outside the house, then ran the all-weather cat6 around the outside, back into another hole on the opposite end of the house. I didn't need a jack in every room. The wire connects the upstairs and downstairs wifi routers.

Yep, great idea too. We have an old satellite coax line that runs into the back of the house to the living room this same way. They even make little seal plug thingies with a hole in the middle you can run the cat6 thru it and caulk it so it’s nice and sealed. Depending on your siding, you can usually hide the cable under where the siding pieces meet.captainsnarf wrote: ↑Mon Sep 02, 2024 6:04 pm I drilled a hole through the wall from inside to outside the house, then ran the all-weather cat6 around the outside, back into another hole on the opposite end of the house. Re: Good Router?
Need to find some weatherproof cat6.
Although so far the two XT12 have been covering everyone. The far garage ring camera is weak but that's through at least 4 walls, 2 exterior and probably 120 ft.
Or do as FR suggested some overhead cable runs, could accent with some nice led lighting...

Re: Good Router?
So I got my other two. Other than the costs, these things rock.
Even far away via wireless many devices are pulling 150 Mb consistently.
The Mesh will dynamically reconfigure itself, so if say two nodes are better connect in a line vs. hub-spoke it does that automagically. Pretty cool. Especially since my house seems to decide when to shield itself....
Last night my son was downloading on Xbox, other son playing Xbox and me on UT... no lag at all.
